Text-First Chat

Just talk. Your camera
can stay off.

Nobody wants to be put on camera with a total stranger the second they show up. On Meowdy, every chat starts as text. Voice and video are there if you both want them, and only then.

"What if they expect me to go on camera?"

It's a completely normal thing to worry about. Showing your face to someone you just met, with no warning and no way to back out, is a lot to ask. So Meowdy doesn't ask it. There's no camera prompt when you connect, no expectation set by the app that video is coming. You can type a first message, see how the conversation feels, and never touch the camera button at all if you don't want to. That's not a workaround, it's just how the app works for everyone, every time.

How text-only chat actually works

No hidden settings to find, this is simply the default for every conversation.

01

You land straight in a text chat

No camera prompt, no "turn on your video to continue." You're matched with someone and typing within seconds, exactly like texting a friend.

02

Your camera and mic stay off unless you turn them on

Nothing about your camera or microphone activates on its own. If you never tap the call button, they're simply never used.

03

Voice or video is a request, not a switch

Either person can ask to start a call. The other person sees the request and has to say yes. A single "no thanks" and it's over, the text chat carries right on.

04

You can stay text-only for as long as you want

For one chat, for every chat, forever. There's no limit, no nudge, and no downgrade in the experience for keeping your camera off the whole time.

One app, your choice every time

If you stay text-only

  • Your camera and microphone are never turned on
  • You get the full conversation, typing indicators and all
  • Nothing in the app treats this as a lesser experience

If you want to add video later

  • Either person can ask, at any point in the conversation
  • The other person has to accept before anything turns on
  • You can end the call and drop straight back to text
